Autumn: a cause to look back and to look up. We often look back during this season to reflect on the past year. “My, oh my, where has the summer gone?” It also seems like the cooler temperatures help us slow down and prepare for the pending winter hibernation. In the Midwest we often stop to look up, since it’s really hard not to notice the brightly colored trees and falling leaves.
Where’s the best place to remember the past and enjoy the fall colors? If I were you, I’d take a stroll through the Lincoln Memorial Garden in Springfield, Illinois. Where else can you find a natural area that highlights our nation’s most famous president, was designed by one of our most famous landscape architects, and compliments a 4,000 acre lake / nature center?
It’s called a memorial garden, but it actually showcases trees! The forest was originally planted with saplings that represent the trees of President Lincoln’s home states (Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois).
As you visit, this space will help you reimagine a number of things! Reimagine what the term “garden” means to you; maybe it means trees. Reimagine the definition of “memorial,” not as a memory, but maybe as a living tribute!
